Equine Mortality Insurance

Clay Thomas & Associates is an industry leader in providing equine mortality insurance to horse owners across the United States. While we specialize in insuring race horses, our equine program covers any living equine for full mortality resulting from illness, disease or incident. Included within the full mortality policy form is coverage for destruction to relieve inhumane suffering resulting from illness or incident, as well as emergency colic surgery reimbursement [up to the sublimit as provided within the policy].

Coverage is available in all 50 states and Canada, and international coverage can be provided for horses in global transit. Our equine mortality programs are underwritten by experts who share a strong knowledge and passion of the equine industry.

In addition to the best in industry knowledge, our insurers maintain some of the highest A.M. Best Ratings available, with respects to financial strength and stability. Whether you are a one-horse stable or a syndicate with hundreds of horses under care and management, Clay Thomas & Associates can put together a comprehensive and cost-effective insurance program to limit your financial risk.

Barrenness and Prospective Foal

Broodmare owners can protect their residual investment by insuring their broodmare [and prospective foal] against barrenness of the mare and mortality of the prospective foal. When negotiating a stud-fee with no guarantee, Barrenness and Prospective Foal overage can limit your risk by insuring you for up to 200% of the negotiated stud-fee.

The Barrenness portion of the policy will cover you in the event your mare is unable to conceive and deliver a single, live foal. With respects to the Prospective Foal portion of the policy, upon veterinary confirmation that your broodmare has conceived, the policy covers you in the event your mare is unable to deliver a single, live foal. Prospective Foal coverage can extend for up to 30 days after birth.

Stallion Infertility

Clay Thomas & Associates also provides a mortality-fertility package on first year stallions entering the breeding shed. This package includes full mortality, accident, sickness and disease, and 60% congenital infertility. Full mortality and accident, sickness, and disease insurance are also available for share owners of any syndicated stallion.

Automatic Fall of the Hammer Coverage

From the Fasig-Tipton yearling sale in Saratoga, New York down to the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s two-year old auction in Miami, Florida, Clay Thomas representatives attend nearly every auction. Active auction purchasers that insure their bloodstock should include the available ‘Fall of the Hammer’ coverage. This coverage comes at no cost and provides Full Mortality coverage on any equine that is purchased at auction – the very second the hammer drops. With this coverage benefit, there is no need to immediately contact Clay Thomas to add the horse to your policy, as you horse will be covered for Full Mortality as it makes its way back to the consigner’s barn, onto the van, and while in transit to its ultimate destination.

‘Fall of the Hammer’ coverage can be added to your policy at no cost by speaking with one of our Account Managers. Should you have added ‘Fall of the Hammer’ coverage and wish to exclude a particular purchase from coverage, simply contact us and the horse will be removed from the policy at no cost to you.

Horseowners Liability

Horses present their owners with the risk of third-party bodily injury and property damage caused by the horse's actions. From injurious kicks and bites to damage to personal property, horse owner's liability insurance protects you and your personal assets in the event of a claim and lawsuit.

One of our insured’s relied upon this coverage in an unfortunate incident. Attempting to pinhook a two-year old thoroughbred at auction, the consigned horse got loose from the handler’s grip, ran through the gates and entered a roadway, striking an automobile and killing a passenger. Needless to say, the horse owners were brought into a lawsuit by the victims family, which triggered the Horseowner’s Liability policy. Don't leave yourself unprotected...protect your assets today!
